Voluntary Work
Within the arts field where there is little or no career structure. Working as a volunteer can be a useful way to gain the skills and experience necessary for a particular type of work e.g. gallery education, arts administration, art teaching, art in the community, etc.
If you are considering undertaking voluntary work it’s worth thinking through what kind of work experience you need, why you might want to work with a particular organisation and what you want out of your experience with them. Working as a volunteer will vary enormously from one organisation to the next. However, those that have worked regularly and successfully with volunteers over a long period of time will always make sure that both parties are clear about their commitments and responsibilities to each other, and ensure that you’re never put at risk by being given a responsibility for which you are unqualified or too inexperienced to handle.
The Resource holds information from local organisations who work with volunteers on a regular basis and a publication on Essential Volunteer Management.
