Artist Resource Volunteer Programme
The Artist Resource offers six-month volunteering placements for artists,
curators and arts managers interested in developing their knowledge
of arts organisations, local resources, and of the areas of practice
relevant to Fabrica's exhibition programme.
The role of the Artist Resource Volunteer
To support the work of the Artist Resource Manager in maintaining
the library and enabling public access to it. Please visit the Artist
Resource Library before submitting your application to the volunteer
programme.
What sort of volunteer is the Artist
Resource looking for?
The work in the Artist Resource is research and administration based,
volunteers need to either have, or be keen to develop, skills in
these areas.
Past volunteers have largely (but not always!) been early career
artists, arts managers and students in visual arts and arts management.
Working in the Artist Resource serves as a good introduction to
the organisations and support structures that exist for artists
and arts managers. Many Artist Resource volunteers have recognised
this as a learning activity that benefits their professional development
and have volunteered accordingly.
What kind of time commitment is expected?
A minimum of one day a week for 6 months.
What sort of work does volunteering
in the Artist Resource entail?
Initially there is a lot of filing in the Artist Resource Library,
this helps a volunteer to become familiar with what the Artist Resource
covers.
Volunteers carry out research into the areas covered by the Artist
Resource. This can include direct contact with the organisations
represented in the library.
Alongside the filing and research into areas already covered by
the Artist Resource, volunteers will be encouraged to develop projects
that build on their own areas of interest and knowledge that will
be added to the resources that the Artist Resource offers.
What other benefits does the AR offer?
Visits to other arts organisations, including 'behind the scenes'
introductions by arts administration and gallery staff.
Opportunities to take part in events organised for Fabrica volunteers.
The opportunity to record and appraise your learning whilst you
are with the Artist Resource.
The Artist Resource Volunteer Programme develops learning in the
following areas:
• Filing, Archiving and Database skills
• Research skills
• Arts Administration
• IT skills (word processing, publishing and database software)
• Networking with artists, arts organisations and arts professionals
• Professional development
• Understanding of the business of the arts
• Understanding of contemporary art and artists
To apply to be a volunteer please complete an application
form. There is often a waiting list but all applications will
be kept on file for 12 months and you will be contacted as soon
as a place becomes available.
