Exhibition
Talks
Artist's Talk
Vincent Mauger
Weds 9 July, 7-8pm
Using his own work as an illustration, Vincent Mauger outlines his
broad and stimulating approach to sculptural investigation, a methodology
that lies at the heart of THE UNDERCROFT.
Animateur's
Story
David Parfitt
Weds 16 July, 7-8pm
A loose visual ramble through the concepts behind Marcel Mauss's
classic anthropological study, The Gift, and Gregory Ulmer's more
recent publication Heuretics, the Logic of Invention. David
Parfitt discusses how they are crucial to sculpture, current
art practice and his residency during THE UNDERCROFT exhibition.

Artist's Talk
Gavin Peacock
Weds 30 July, 7-8pm
Gavin Peacock will give an illustrated talk about Flat
Pack, an ongoing series of work that owes as much to Lego and
Ikea as to the concept of sculpture. What started as a fascination
with the commodification of the minimal aesthetic has led into collaborative
commissions and film works.
Second Sight
Tues 12 August, 2-3.30pm
Booking essential
Led by artist Naomi Kendrick, Second Sight is an exhibition tour
and discussion which explores the exhibition through sound and touch.
A regular event, Second Sight is attended by visually impaired and
blind participants, but is open to all.
Second Sight is a Fabrica/Elephant partnership. www.elephantproject.co.uk
Armchair Critics
Thurs 14 August, 7-8pm
Fabrica's regular, informal forum for discussion in response
to the
exhibitions.
THE UNDERCROFT's all inclusive environment seems to be inspired
by computer generated landscapes, it turns a 'virtually real'
representation into a 'real' form. But what separates the
virtual and the real, and is this virtual reality a new phenomenon
or simply an extension of earlier devices and tricks?
Polly Carter will be in conversation with Ste Curran from Zoe Mode,
a computer games production company.
Events
The Acoustic Sessions
A low key, low-fi audio interpretation of THE UNDERCROFT by invited
guests
Thurs 10 July, 7-8pm
Accompanied by Capt. H Morgan on his accordion, Kirsten Norrie creates
performances that use very eerie, very beautiful lupine wailings.
Thurs 17 July, 7-8pm
Using only a traditional hurdy gurdy, Max Sweatman fills out the
structure and the whole building with mesmeric noise.
Thurs 24 July, 7-8pm
Barbara Keal makes large, odd looking ceramic vessels, she then
blows into them to create a moving, almost traditional form of amplified
resonance.
Thurs 31 July, 7-8pm
Vitamin B12 offer up aural inspiration with their grand collection
of found instruments and random, percussive bric-a-brac.
Hidden
Architecture
Sun 27 July, 12-1.30pm

Meet in front of Brighton Station
Undercrofts are medieval vaulted basements, traditionally crypts
under old English churches. The nineteenth century gothic revival
renewed their popularity - several of Brighton's churches possess
undercrofts, but the largest visible collection are at the station.
Jackie Marsh-Hobbs, Brighton Station's official guide gives an in-depth
tour. She recalls its celebrated history as well as showing some
of the tunnels and structural undercrofting that lie beneath the
building.
