Artist Story - Jacques Nimki
Thursday 27 July 6.00-7.00pm
Jacques Nimki adapts archaic processes more commonly associated with the Victorian era of exploration and collecting, to document and analyse urban plant life (or 'weeds') as a botanist would, but in a deliberately unscientific way, more like a hobbyist.
Using the current exhibition, his experiences of the residency, and examples of past work, he will illustrate the key developments in his artistic practice and his role as an artist educator.
For other examples of his work see www.untolddesign.co.uk/ikon/
and www.theapproach.co.uk/jnimki.html
Armchair Critics
Thursday 10 August 7-8pm
Refreshments provided
Fabrica's regular forum for discussion and debate with Polly Carter.
Woodlock casts doubt on the wisdom of humans controlling the environment and celebrates the anarchic unpredictability of nature.
Is it possible to legislate for climate control? Is Bio-Diversity really an option? Have we lost touch with The Natural?
Weed Walk
Sunday 13 August 4-5.30pm
Not protected by any laws, weeds find their own ways of surviving.
Extremely hardy and almost impossible to eradicate, they can regenerate themselves from tiny pieces of roots or stem, and some can produce thousands of seeds that can germinate, grow and set seed again in only a few weeks.
Jacques Nimki leads a guided meander around the backstreets and waste areas of Brighton looking at these neglected species.
