Equality and Diversity at Fabrica
The notion of equality and diversity is implicit in Fabrica's mission, which is to remove barriers to access, engagement and understanding of contemporary art.
We have therefore developed a number of policies and constructed an action plan around the issues of diversity and equality. In order to demonstrate our commitment we have chosen to publish them on our website.
At Fabrica we understand the concept of diversity to mean more than just race, which it is often reduced to. We choose to consider, gender, race, age, disability, sexual orientation, parental status and life experience amongst others.
During 2007 we carried out monitoring on applicants for two paid roles at Fabrica, there is a link to the results below. We also carried out monitoring on staff and volunteers and on applicants for an opportunity for a networking trip to Lille organised by Fabrica in conjunction with NAN (Networking Artists' Networks).
Later in the year we intend to publish a diversity profile of our board. This has been delayed because a number of changes are currently taking place.
We plan to update our volunteer diversity profiles twice yearly and staff and board profiles yearly.

Monitoring Benchmarks
In order to determine groups that may be under-represented in any particular area we use the following benchmarks:
Gender
No official benchmarks but a 50/50 split is the goal.
Age
A spread across the age range is the goal.
Disability
The current government accepted statistic for disabled people is 22% across the UK. This is based on current DDA (Disability Discrimination Act) definitions of disability. The figure in Brighton and Hove is lower at 18%.
Race
The most recent census information breaks down to
White British 88%
White Other 6.2%
BME 5.8%
Sexual Orientation
There are no official figures for the population of the LGBT community in Brighton and Hove, 13-14% is the accepted conservative estimate with some estimates nearing 20%. The government accepted figure for the general UK population around 6%.
