A SIMPLE ACT OF WONDER
WALTER & ZONIEL
Coming soon in Summer 2020
In this playful new work for Brighton Festival 2020, acclaimed artists Walter & Zoniel connect Moulsecoomb and Bevendean in the suburbs with Fabrica, here in the centre of Brighton.
Drawing on their love of colour, portraiture, humour and their boundless curiosity about people and the stories they tell, Walter & Zoniel invite us into the lives of others, asking us to examine our attitudes about other people and the mythologies or reputations that stick to some places.
In Moulsecoomb and Bevendean the artists will create a colourful trail of temporary works comprising residents’ homes, community and green spaces, including a major work painted on the green at The Avenue. The work in Moulsecoomb and Bevendean has emerged out of an intense period of research with local residents undertaken by the artists earlier this year and which they describe as a ‘portrait’ of a neighbourhood that is largely unnoticed by the rest of the city.
At Fabrica, Walter & Zoniel have applied an equally bright treatment to Fabrica’s exhibition space, experiencing 'the carpet of discovery’ to learn more about the culture and community of Moulsecoomb and Bevendean through photographic images, 360 film, and objects loaned by those who have a particularly compelling story to tell. Due to the COVID-19 restrictions this exhibition has been installed but can only be accessed digitally through Fabrica’s website and social media platforms.
