MICHELE WALKER

Michele Walker

Michele originally trained as a graphic designer during the 1960’s. Over the last twenty-five years her artistic practice has re-focused on contemporary textiles, in particular the stitched quilt. Fabrica gave her the opportunity to work on a different scale, enabling her to move away from the wall-hung quilt and tackle the challenge of a large gallery space head on.

Maker Unknown

For some time Michele has been interested in sashiko, a quilting technique associated with women in the rural industries of Japan. In 2003 Michele was awarded a three-year Arts & Humanities Research Board Fellowship at the University of Brighton, to facilitate her research into sashiko. Maker Unknown, her new commission for Fabrica, is a haunting sculptural work, developed in response to her inquiry into this practice and the decline of the communities that produced it.

Maker Unknown, ia an arrangement of thirty-three, upright, bamboo poles wrapped in indigo fabric. Sound and lighting effects are also incorporated, creating an absorbing, self-contained environment, which the viewer is invited to observe but not enter. Totemic in feel, this installation is an outsider’s perception of rural Japanese life, a response to a fading tradition and an acknowledgement to the marginalised workers who spent heir lives practising the sashiko technique.

Sashiko

Sashiko is a traditional hand-sewn technique of joining layers of cotton fabric together with a simple running stitch. The resulting material is an extremely durable and is used for work clothing.
