Book Launch: A Friable Earth by Jackie Wills
Time & Location
About The Event
Join us for the launch of poet Jackie Wills’ new collection, A Friable Earth.
“Is it already time for last things?” Beginning with Last Smear, Wills appraises the new landscapes of age and her changing body. She carries spiders in her hair, turns into an age-defying cream, sees herself in the mirror as a tortoise, fantasises about turning into mud, or a slowworm. Wills deals with ageing and medical appointments with humour, but when it comes to the homeless, lonely, mentally ill, her poems are stark - a young man lives in a car, people walk miles to find wood, a man hallucinates beetles on office steps.
Wills has written extensively about women’s lives, including motherhood and menopause. Her poems have been described as “full of fabulous and exact fictions”, irreverent, bewitching, compassionate and surreal.
She was Royal Literary Fund Fellow at the universities of Surrey and Sussex and runs a reading group for young people with mental health problems. She has worked with multinational corporations, orchestras, museums, a children’s secure unit, charities for homeless people and for refugees. Much of her work has demonstrated the power of poetry to enable people to reflect and share experiences.
Wills will read from the book and introduce surprise guests.
