About The Event

Fabrica’s Fresh Perspectives presents a film watchalong of The Fall and Dislocation Blues. This double-bill corresponds to the themes of Fabrica’s Summer digital exhibition, A Simple Act of Wonder. Both films focus on how community, of all ages and creed, and storytelling, mythic and memorial, brings brightness in the darkest of times. This bittersweet assessment of community is one we believe all can relate to during this global pandemic.

The Fall (Tarsem Singh, 2006, 1hr 57m) Tarsem Singh’s 2006 ‘The Fall’ is a one-of-a-kind film celebrating storytelling. Ordinarily set in the 1920s, American stuntman Roy meets Alexandria, an Romanian child, in a LA hospital. The two patients make an unlikely friendship bonding over stories. Roy’s narration brought to life by Alexandria’s overactive imagination creates a colourful combo of American and Indian influences. Much like A Simple Act of Wonder, the film serves as a love letter to stories and its power in communities, both close and continental. The Fall ultimately celebrates the power of storytelling in connecting communities, regardless what communication barriers there may be.

Dislocation Blues (Sky Hopinka, 2017, 17m) Sky Hopinka's 2017 Dislocation Blues is a short US documentary that investigates two protesters of Standing Rock on their retrospective experience of the community that grew there in the face of displacement. Though fleeting, as memory often is, this beautifully shot short explores potent themes of community, their ideologies, and their narratives.  “No one person is the authority on anything. It’s a story told by many.”
